Harriet Tubman

January 29, 1822 - March 10, 1913. Araminta “Harriet” Tubman (née Ross) was an American abolitionist and activist. She is best known for her daring work on the Underground Railroad. Tubman was born into slavery in Maryland and experienced brutality and violence at the hands of slaveholders in her youth. In 1849, Tubman escaped to freedom in Philadelphia and as early as 1851 began helping other slaves do the same. Tubman made 13 runs through the Underground Railroad to help free her enslaved family, friends and strangers and guide them north, ultimately helping around 70 people to freedom. She was nicknamed “Moses” and “never lost a passenger.”
